I love patchwork, mosaics & other designs that are like this - smaller pieces making up a larger unit. I'm looking into this in the studio but also give thought whilst doing other things. For example, after I'd finished some unpicking (alterations for a customer), I found the above pile of thread 'bits' in front of me. Having thought of 'cells' in my head, I immediately saw their potential as 'cell structure' - they were saved & taken over to my 'design centre' (ie. large table across the other side of the studio) for next stages.
